The Bakarević Fountain is embedded in the courtyard wall of the Kekeki Sinan Bakarević Mosque, which was built before 1515 (Sarajevo C. I.). At the time when Hamdija Kreševljaković wrote his book, the fountain existed almost in the same form as it is today (Kreševljaković, 1939), and at that time, the fountain was called ‘Švrakina Fountain.’ Kreševljaković noted that he found the first mention of this fountain dating back to 1773, but in his opinion, it was much older than that. He based this on the assumption that the old water supply system, which existed there, ended right next to the Kekeki Sinan Bakarević Mosque, and that both the water supply system and the mosque were certainly built by the same man – Kekedži Sinan. He also wrote that the fountain was moved to a new location during the repair of the mosque’s courtyard wall in 1902, and during these repairs, the old trough cracked and was replaced with a new one. A comparison of the historical photograph with the appearance during the field survey revealed that the fountain is almost the same as it was 100 years ago. This can be concluded from the fact that today, the same decorative carving can be seen, which also existed on the fountain at that time, and the arrangement of the stones visible on the face of the fountain is almost identical – with the exception that the top layer of stones on the body of the fountain, just below the decorative finish at the top, is missing today. This is also indicated by the appearance of the trough, as the water outlet opening is located at the end of the left part of its front side, both on the historical photograph and today. At the time of the field visit, the fountain was functional, and the push faucet located slightly below the middle of the front face of the fountain allowed controlled water consumption. In addition, mild discolorations caused by moisture were visible on the front surface of the fountain below the push faucet, as well as on the inner sides and the front surface of the trough below the water outlet opening.
