The public fountain Sarači is located at the corner of Sarači and Mudželit Veliki streets. It is part of the courtyard wall of the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, which is one of the most prominent and significant mosques in the entire country of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the fountain is one of the most well-known fountains in the city of Sarajevo. Kreševljaković mentions this fountain in his book, where it is listed under the name ‘Fountains in the Courtyard Wall of Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque,’ but he also notes that it was known as ‘Čifte-češme’ (double fountain) (Kreševljaković, 1939). He wrote that this fountain is undoubtedly as old as the Gazi Husrev-beg water supply, which drew water from the ‘Crnil’ spring, dating this fountain to around 1530. He also noted that the fountain was connected to the hot water system of the šadrvan within the mosque’s courtyard. This fountain has two functional horizontal spouts that ensure a constant flow of water, and instead of a trough, there is only a large drainage opening located directly below the spouts. During the site visit, serious discoloration caused by moisture was visible on all surfaces below the spouts. Due to the traffic on Sarači Street and the fact that the fountain is located in one of the most important and visited places in the entire country, it is essential that the fountain’s wall is cleaned much more frequently than it currently is, and that the entire environment around the fountain is regularly maintained.
